AZALEA MARTIN
America's Favorite Little SisterEveryone knows about the Martin family's royal legacy in Hollywood. The original Martins were influential stars of silent films, the next were all Academy Award winners, and, right now, four Martin kids are carrying on the family tradition. Liddy Martin is known as one of the classiest of today's stars; she has both a college degree and a well-formed resume. Cay Martin is the handsome king of California, who recently welcomed his first daughter into the world. The infamous Tommy Martin has been in and out of rehab, but still manages to strongly hold his acting career. And then, there's twenty-year-old Azalea Martin, our subject. Azalea isn't as intellectual as Liddy is, or as cool as Cay is, or as troublesome as Tommy is. No, the thing everyone likes about the youngest Martin is that she's the youngest Martin. The age gap isn't too large between her and the other Martin kids, but it's enough to make her the beloved baby of the family. Something else that sets Azalea apart from her older siblings is her personality. There's a classy one, a cool one, and one the abuses substances, and Azalea is the eccentric and funny one of the bunch. She's known for having a smile on her face twenty-four/seven (unless she's acting) and always making an effort to brighten up someone's day. Though she's expressed that music isn't her passion,
she's shown support for indie rock and alternative groups of the day, making sure to attend the California stop on the Warped Tour each year and appearing at concerts for her favorite bands when she can. As for her acting, Azalea got her first job in 2004; she was given the role of Cady Heron in the popular movie Mean Girls. Since then, she's acted in a few other films, like Pride & Prejudice and Superbad - in some, she has worked alongside her fabulous family. Someone has even gone so far as to compare her to presidential candidate Barack Obama: she hasn't gotten much of a chance to prove herself yet, but everyone loves her anyway. We decided to follow around the youngest Martin for a day to see what it's like to be the little princess of a royal Hollywood family. Suprisingly, it was much like the days that us two writers have: hectic, long, and most definitely fun.
7:30 AM - WAKE-UP CALL! We weren't there to witness it, but Azalea told us that she wakes up at 7:30 each weekday, thanks to her trendy iHome and iPod Classic. "I like waking up to loud music since I'm a heavy sleeper. If I set the alarm to play Pink Floyd or something, I'd just keep sleeping," she tells us. "Usually, I play hair metal bands. It was AC/DC this morning," she continued. When we asked her about her music taste outside of what she likes to use as her wake-up call, she told us she's a fan of "alternative" and "indie rock" music. "Many bands I like broke up because they were financially struggling. Things like that shouldn't happen, so I make it a point to buy CDs attend concerts for the bands I support. Everyone should get a chance to express their music even if they're not number one on TRL every day," she said. I guess we won't be seeing Azalea at the dance clubs most celebs go to!
8:00 AM TO 8:30 AM - PREP AND PRIMP! "I'm a low-maintenance kind of girl," Azalea said. When we joined her at 8:00 to watch her get ready for the day, we were surprised at how short the whole process took. After hopping into the shower for fifteen minutes (don't worry, we waited outside while she was there) Azalea dried her hair with a towel and tossed on a pair of dark jeans and a green t-shirt. She then proceeded into the bathroom to wash her face - plain warm water, nothing else - and brush her teeth with a regular plastic toothbrush and toothpaste, which she says she got from her dentist. Only thirty minutes had passed when Azalea told us she was ready to head out. If there was one thing we noticed about her, it was that she had no makeup on at all. "I'll wear it for special occasions, but on a regular day, I just go without it," she says casually. "I'm such a klutz. I always smudge it when I do it myself."
8:30 AM TO 8:45 AM - STARBUCKS TIME! As we rode a public bus towards Azalea's first stop, she told us, "The one thing I can't live without is Starbucks... and my family, but they're people." She chuckled with us all along the ride until she stood up at the second stop of the bus route. We walked a block and a half before we entered a normal Starbucks coffee shop, jazz music playing and busy people buying. Azalea stood in line - signing an autograph for the customer standing in front of us - and, once at the front, she ordered coffee and double chocolate cookies for all three of us. Instead of hopping back on the bus, Azalea sat down in the shop at a wooden table and chair by the window. "I hate taking my food with me for two reasons," she told us. We must've looked puzzled, seeing as there was only one other person staying inside for their breakfast. "I'll probably spill it everywhere, and I like taking my time." We chatted for fifteen minutes before tossing our garbage away and walking back outside.
9:00 AM TO 1:00 PM - PHOTOSHOOT! We all went back on a bus to our headquarters for Azalea's photoshoot (the pictures you see decorating the sides of this article). She got to pick her wardrobe and setting, and she surprised all of us by picking one of the
most simple sets we've ever used, and her personality definitely showed through in the shots. All she did was change her shirt and jeans - she refused to change out of her shoes - and got her hair straightened a bit by a stylist. "I hate all those prim and proper shoots that people want me to do," she said. "I'm a total tomboy. When I was little, I wanted to look more like Liddy; I thought she was prettier than Cinderella and Snow White combined. But one day I got up and I was just like, 'Why should I blend in when I'm more comfortable like this?' So I stopped trying to look like a princess, and I started looking like me." Her smiling face and upbeat aura made us all wish we were jumping on the golden chairs with her.
1:00 PM TO 2:00 PM - LUNCH BREAK! While we ate bowls of lo mein and chicken, Azalea helped herself to macaroni and soy cheese. Why? "I'm a vegan," she told us, dipping her fork into her plate and stabbing at the "cheesy" meal. "I became a vegetarian right before I graduated high school. It was part of a petition to change school lunches... I honestly forget what was so wrong with the meat they put inside. But, after the petition ended, it stuck. I had grown to dislike all meat, not just the stuff in school lunches." She paused here to take a sip of her water. "And then I learned about the cruelty that cows and chickens faced when it came to taking their milk and eggs. It grossed me out to no end, so I stopped consuming any sort of animal product." We asked her about her new job as an advocate for PETA2. "I'm not classy enough for PETA," she jokes. "But PETA2 took me in like they'd been waiting for me to talk to them."
2:00 PM TO 5:00 PM - TEDIOUS ERRANDS! "I usually have one day off each week, and that's today," Azalea said before reassuring us that she enjoyed having two writers following her around. "I have to run errands just like everyone else." We followed Azalea to the grocery store where she bought fruits and veggies, soy products, and a few bags of junk food. Then, we accompanied her back to her apartment to drop off the groceries and pick up her Havanese puppy, Bruno (the self-proclaimed love of her life) and took him on a walk through Los Angeles. We stopped at a CVS to get a pack of mints and some Gatorade before we headed back once again to her home. She turned on her iHome, which was softly playing a rock tune, and we chatted for a bit as she put the groceries away.
5:00 PM TO WHO KNOWS? - OUT FOR THE NIGHT! With Bruno sleeping in his bed at the corner of her living room, Azalea changed out of her casual attire and into a boyish, but more trendy, outfit: black skinny pants with thin suspenders instead of a belt over a white blouse and black tie. And, thanks to our suggestion, she finally changed out of her battered red chucks and into black flats. "I don't really know where I'm gonna go tonight," she said, plopping down on the couch beside us. "I'll probably go visit Tommy, but maybe I'll just be back here with a rented movie in ten minutes." She paused, glancing out the window. "I'm one of those people who has to be outside and looking around in order to figure out what I'll do." She started saying goodbye as we all headed towards the elevator. As we got into our car, she looked at us through the open window and added onto her thought, "The opportunity has to be right in front of me if I'm going to consider taking it."
